Flammable Liquids & Chemicals and their Various Properties

Flammable Liquids & Chemicals and their Various Properties

The vapour of a flammable liquid ignites and causes fire or explosion-not the liquid itself.

The flammable capacity of a liquid and or gas lies in its physical properties:

  1. Vapour Pressure
  2. Flash Point
  3. Limits of Flammability
  4. Vapour Density
  5. Vapour Pressure

What is Vapour Pressure?

  • Vapour pressure is a measure of how fast a liquid evaporates.
  • The higher the vapour pressure the more rapidly the liquid will evaporate.
  • Vapour pressure goes up and down with the temperature of the liquid.
  • Hydraulic Systems of the heavy equipment and machinery use oil under pressure to utilize the use of chemicals/substances or liquids. When the System is compromised, hazardous conditions of the liquids, chemicals and or gases can be enhanced.

What is Flash Point?

The Flashpoint of any flammable liquids & chemicals is the lowest temperature at which a liquid, gas and or gases can constitute an ignitable solution in the air near the surface of the liquid, gas or chemicals.

The lower property of the liquid and or substance’s flashpoint, the smooth it is to burn the material, liquids and or substances. For example, petrol/diesel fuel has a flashpoint of-40 degrees Centigrade (-40 Fahrenheit) and is more flammable than ethylene glycol (antifreeze) which has a flashpoint of 111 degrees Centigrade (232

Flashpoint

FP is the lowest temperature at which a liquid can form an ignitable mixture in air near the surface of the liquid? The lower property of the flashpoint, the easier it is to ignite the liquids or chemicals. Such as gasoline has a flashpoint of -40 degrees Centigrade (-40 Fahrenheit) and is more flammable than ethylene glycol (antifreeze) which has a flashpoint of 111 degrees Centigrade (232)

Liquids or Gas’s Ignition Point/kindling Point

The minimum temperature at which a substance, Liquid or gas will continue to burn without additional application of external heat. Also called kindling point.
