What is Chemical Risk Assessment?
A chemical risk assessment associates with the recognition of chemical or substances hazards in the worksite and recommends controls to minimize exposure and harm to the workforce. It determines the transportation, storage and handling of hazardous and or substances proactive action can be taken to reduce its harm and negative severe effects on health.

Hazards Associated with Chemical or Substances.

As being a health and safety professional, you should observe and inspect the chemical storage, transport or usage very closely at worksite or warehouse when carrying out a chemical and or substance risk assessment and some instructions on how to prevent such hazards.

Inappropriate storage of chemicals & Substances

Imprudent storage of hazardous chemicals could cause fires, burns and explosions. All type of hazardous chemicals or substances must be closely stored in proper standardized containers and warehouses according to information, labeling and regulatory requirements according to the state or country where organization or company exist.

Improper Labeling of Containers

Most of the explosions, acid burns, and or the release of toxic fumes or gases occurs due to the inappropriate labeling of chemical or substance containers. As per OSHA instructions and technical guidelines, and all chemical or substance labeling should have pictograms, a signal word, hazard and precautionary statements, the product identifier, and supplier identification.

Long Term Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals

Lengthy exposure to substances and hazardous chemicals may lead to the development of ill-health and further to some categories of cancer. Management of all level particularly top and decision making should take necessary measure to reduce, eliminate, or look for an alternative to less hazardous or safeguard their employee’s exposure to lethal chemicals by implementing variations in the process changes and must provide them and proper personal protective equipment.
Most of the scientists or their assistants which used to work in nuclear projects often get serious lung issues due to being exposed to chemical radiation for over 15-25 years.

Inappropriate Health and Safety Training to the Workforce

The lack of proper HSE induction for employees may cause chemical injuries and more severe ill-health. Proper training must be delivered to the workforce who work around hazardous substances and or chemicals to reduce the risk of acute or chronic injury.
A comprehensive study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) detected that more than 12,000-15000 hospital and other health care workers were often untrained on the hazards of surgical smoke, which can cause both acute and chronic health issues.

Lack of Equipment Maintenance

Badly maintained equipment or tools can malfunction chemical or substances, or cause flammable chemicals to ignite. Proper equipment or tool maintenance by competent personals will help to minimize the risk of faults.

Purpose of International Chemical Safety Cards

The International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSC) provide necessary occupational health and safety information on chemicals and or substance to develop their safe utilization. Such emergency cards are used by workers, and by those responsible for health and safety in factories, agriculture, construction and other workplaces, and also in some part of education and training tasks/jobs. Furthermore, they can also be used by agencies responding to fatal or severe and critical chemical incidents.
Emergency cards provide information on the elemental hazards of specific chemicals and substances together with first aid and fire-fighting necessary measures, and more information about anticipation for spillage, disposal, storage, packaging, labeling and transport of the chemicals and or hazards. The International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSC) has no proper legal status and may not reflect in all cases the detailed requirements included in national legislation.
