1. Falls from heights


1.1. Who Might Be Harmed?

  • Operative

1.2. How Is the Risk Controlled?

  • Working at height risk assessments are reviewed regularly and revised as appropriate.
  • Relevant employees have been trained in the hazards associated with working at height and the control measures to be employed.
  • All work at height is properly planned (access equipment, emergency procedures, consideration of obstructions, weather conditions).
  • Safe access/egress to/from, work at height areas is provided and ladders are secured to scaffolding.
  • All work at height is supervised by a minimum level 2 scaffolder.
  • All operatives working at height will be working from edge-protected platforms with handrails for using harnesses connected to access points. Hard hats and protective clothing/footwear are always worn.
  • Working at height procedures are checked and monitored regularly.
  • Safety harnesses and anchoring points are checked regularly by a competent person. Scaffold structures are erected and dismantled by competent contractors and checked by a competent person (scaffolding supervisor).
  • All work-at-height operations are checked and monitored regularly by a competent person. Double lanyards are to be used when working on beams.


2. Falling objects

2.2. How Is the Risk Controlled?

  • Materials are not stored at height unless required.
  • All reasonably practicable measures are taken to avoid falling objects (fences, barriers, and toe boards).
  • Areas, where objects may fall directly below and surrounding the scaffolding, are cordoned off whilst scaffolding is being erected/dismantled. All Operatives and site visitors must always wear safety helmets during the erection and dismantling of the scaffolding.
  • Scaffolding is to be constructed as per design.
  • All work will be stopped if these conditions are not met.
  • Scaffolding will be inspected by the scaffolding supervisor and signed off before handover.


3. Manual Handling


3.1. Who Might Be Harmed?

  • Operative
  • Contractor

3.2. How Is the Risk Controlled?

  • Manual handling risks assessed.
  • Staff trained in manual handling and re-visited during toolbox talks.
  • Mechanical aids are used where possible. Scaffolding must be inspected regularly or after an incident by a competent person.


4. Slip/Trip risk


4.1. Who Might Be Harmed?

 Operatives

4.2. How Is the Risk Controlled?

  • Good site housekeeping must be maintained and inspected by the scaffolding supervisor.
  • Only required Operatives on-site during the erection and dismantling of the scaffolding. No public access until the site has been signed off by the scaffolding supervisor.
  • Correct footwear must be always worn.
