Scope of Work

Vacuum Cleaning (Suction Cleaning)

Equipment Required

  • Rubber Gloves.
  • Vacuum Cleaner.
  • Attachments for the vacuum cleaner (Crevice Tool, upholstery tool, floor Tool).
  • Warning Signs.

Health & Safety and Environment

  • Do not use any equipment and or machinery unless you have received particular training in how to use.
  • Check the power supply cables and plug for physical damage – if damage or technical defects are detected, apply a DO NOT USE label and report to project/site Supervisor or line Manager ASAP.
  • Check the Portable Appliance Test (PAT) label – Do not use any equipment and or device that has not been tested within the last 12 months – Attach a DO NOT USE label and report to project/site Supervisor or line Manager ASAP.
  • When using electrical machinery, device or equipment, a circuit breaker should be used if essential.
  • Before plugging a machine/device into an electric socket, make sure the switch is in the OFF position first.
  • Make sure your hands are DRY before plugging/unplugging a machine.
  • Place “Cleaning in Progress Signs” in the area where the workforce is working – install them accurately so that they are effective.
  • Make sure that power/electrical cables do not present a TRIP HAZARD – minimize this risk as far as you possibly can – place warning signs over trailing cables or other objects.
  • Should the machine make unusual noises, vibrate or otherwise behave strangely, switch off immediately, unplug it and check it has been set-up essentially. If the problem lingers on, install a DO NOT USE label and report to project/site Supervisor or line Manager ASAP.
  • Always keep the cable behind you and the machine while working.
  • Do not adjust or change the fittings on the machine when it is plugged in.
  • Equipment should be clean before use and left in a clean/safe condition after use and properly stored in the storeroom

Methodology

  • Put on rubber gloves.
  • Always use a “CLEANING IN PROGRESS” warning sign and make sure they are placed in sensible locations.
  • Move furniture so the area to be cleaned is freely available.
  • Pick up all large items, for example, crisp packets, tissues.
  • Attach the appropriate tool onto the vacuum cleaner (refer to manufacturers’ instructions).
  • Unwind cable and plug into a mains socket and a circuit breaker if appropriate.
  • For floor cleaning, adjust the floor tool so that the bristles are:

  1. Hard floor – Bristles down
  2. Soft floor – Bristles up.

  • Switch the vacuum cleaner on.
  • Start vacuuming the floor at a point furthest from the door, paying particular attention to edges and corners in busy areas.
  • Vacuum clean the floor all the floor area in parallel, overlapping lanes - several passes may be needed.
  • Always finish in the same direction that the carpet pile runs.
  • On completion, re-wind the electricity cable, check, clean and return to the storage area.
  • Remove gloves, wash and sanitize hands.
